How easy is it to Sign Online?
The long version for folks like me who like to know what to expect:
-
Click the link in your email, and you will join the online notary session via video feed.
-
You will be asked to confirm your consent to be recorded. Your notary will be on audio and video with you from here! Please feel free to ask any questions you may have.
-
Enter your information at the prompts.
-
If your have a non-US-issued ID, your session must be set up to verify ID using biometrics, also known as "selfie verification." You will be asked to take photos of your ID, and then images of your face at a few different angles. The system will then compare your face to your ID photo.
-
If you have a US-issued ID and a SSN or ITIN, your ID verification method is Knowledge-Based Authentication (KBA) questions. You will be asked 5 questions with multiple choice answers. If anything looks familiar, such as a sibling's old address or the zip code next to one you used to live in, select that (if nothing else is a more-correct answer). You must get 4/5 questions correct within 2 minutes, and you have two tries to get it right. If the authentication fails, we have to wait 24 hours to try again, though your notary may have other options to offer you.
-
Once you've passed the KBA, you will be asked to take photos of your ID. You may be able to upload an existing picture, but do have the physical ID handy as your notary will need to confirm you have it physically present.
-
Your notary will ask you for your consent to be recorded, if they haven't already. They will ask you to introduce yourself and state what you're signing. A brief answer such as the title of the document or "the closing package to buy a house" is fine.
-
Next you will be asked to raise your right hand and swear or affirm that you are signing freely & willingly, and that everything in the document(s) is true and correct to the best of your knowledge.
-
Go through the documents page by page to verify the information is correct. You will have electronic "blanks" or fields to fill in any information that may be missing. Please feel free to tell your notary if you need a blank where there isn't one, or don't need to fill out a blank.
-
Once you're ready to sign, you will be asked to enter your electronic signature, either by drawing or typing it, and consent to use it as an e-signature just like writing on paper. The notary will fill out the notary blocks as we go so you can witness it happening (an important part of the notarial process!).
-
After everything is signed, if you are being billed directly your notary will finalize your invoice and send it to you via email. Please pay your invoice promptly so we may proceed. When the notary has been hired by a third party, such as a title agency, the invoice will be sent to that third party directly.
-
You'll have a chance to ask any further questions before we end the session. Stay until you're disconnected - the notary must complete the session, and the signers have to be there for it to finish compiling the documents.
-
After the platform ends the session, your documents will be released immediately. You will receive an email with a link to download them. When the notary has been hired by a third party we will also send the documents to them.
And that's it!
When you say anywhere...
You will need a stable internet connection.
If your internet connection is spotty, it causes problems. At best, it just won't work. At worst, it comes across as AI glitches and your account may be flagged for fraud.
We don't want that!
If you're not sure about your internet connection, we can do a trial run of your appointment before committing to a time. Or if we decide it's just not working mid-appointment, we can come back to it later.
You will NOT be charged until your notarization is complete.
