Especially in the early stages, dementia and Alzheimers come with lucid periods where people can still orient themselves enough to consent and sign. I will not notarize something if the person in front of me is not able to consent. But there are lots of options – morning appointments and multiple trips are common. Give me a call so we can discuss the situation before you pay a travel fee for someone who can't sign today.

What if my loved one has dementia?

Section 33 of the Michigan Law of Notarial Acts allows a notary to sign on behalf of someone who is mentally conscious and consenting, physically unable to make their own mark or signature, and who instructs the notary they would like this accommodation. So, yes, but you have to ask for it.
